A large and early pair of 18th century iron endirons or firedogs in very good condition. Included a cup-shaped top-hold 'porridge' (a food, commonly eaten as a céreal-grain in milk). The patina dues to age and use. The horizontal bars in the back are re-newed, in the past.
An endiron or firedog is a bracket support, normally found in pairs, on which logs are laid for burning in an open fireplace, so that air mai circulate under the firewood, to improve air circulation for better burning, less smoke and stops the logs from rolling out into the room.
The two, showen here, are made for a higher fireplace, often stone.
